The health of the liver is vital to human health.  Its many functions include the production of essential elements such as red blood cells, bile for fat digestion, cholesterol and proteins such as bilirubin.   The liver also removes toxins, eliminates deadly ammonia, stores and filters the blood and stores the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Processing of amino acids begins in the liver and it regulates blood glucose levels through the storage and breakdown of glycogen.

With the many duties the liver has to perform it is not hard to see why the liver is at the centre of so many pathologies. Therefore supplements indicated for a condition specific to the liver or one that involves this organ must not only treat or cleanse the tissue but also support this organ as it continues to function.

Alpha Science Laboratories, distributed by Integra Nutrition, has not only taken care to formulate products to focus on these needs, but has followed every possible step to ensure the ingredients are prepared properly to maximize their benefit.

Quality

The herbs used in our products are attained from longstanding trusted growers and harvesters.  The herbs are either shipped to our facility in whole form, not ground, or come in a standardized form.

The standardized preparations we use are measured with regard to the specific molecular forms of the active ingredients.  Molecules occur in different forms or isomers that determine whether they will be therapeutic for the indication for which they are recommended.  Measuring equipment may not discern between different forms of each molecule.  Therefore, extra care is necessary to ensure each active ingredient is standardized according to specific protocols.

Our herbs are prepared under strict methods to retain the maximum benefit of their active ingredients.  Third party verification is used to test for heavy metal and biological contamination.

Products

Milk Thistle and Dandelion Root are each used in our Liver Support and Liver Cleanse formulas.

Milk Thistle and its active bioflavonoid principle, silymarin, have hepatic protective action against toxins and liver degeneration The therapeutic activity of silymarin is based on two mechanisms of action. The first is the support of the outer hepatocyte cell membrane that prevents toxin penetration, and the second involves the stimulation of ribosomal protein synthesis, which can stimulate liver regeneration and the formation of new hepatocytes.   It promotes the regeneration of injured hepatic cells and increases glycogenesis and nucleic acid metabolism. It can increase the secretion of bile into the duodenum, and exerts a gastroprotective effect to prevent ischemic mucosal injury.

Dandelion Root contains bitter constituents that increase bile flow.  This herb cleanses and detoxifies the liver. In traditional Chinese medicine this herb clears heat and resolves dampness for damp-heat jaundice.

The balance of each formulation may be described as follows.

Liver Support Formula treats specific liver ailments and rejuvenates the tissue.

Blessed Thistle generally supports liver function and Swertia Pseudochinensis has a protective effect on the liver and is effective against CCl4-induced injuries. It is choleretic and increases hepatocyte rejuvenation.

Schizandra and its active principle g-schizandrin have a protective effect on the liver and can lower the g-glutamyl transferase activity.  In animals exposed to carbon tetrachloride, there was a remarkable improvement in liver function and recovery of the degenerated tissue. Protein synthesis and the cytochrome P-450 content were greatly increased.  This herb significantly increases the hepatic glutathione level and activities of hepatic glucose-6-phosphate and glutathione reductase (GRD), as well as decreases the susceptibility of tissue damage due to peroxide-induced GSH-depletion.  Active constituents in this herb act as potent antioxidants that reduce the symptoms of hepatitis and have been shown to improve bile acid metabolism, stimulate hepatic cell proliferation, improve liver regeneration, hepatic blood flow and liver function recovery.

Cellulase is added to help break down the cell wall of each dry herb.  The primary method by which we gain access to plant (or herb) cell contents is by the breakdown of the cell wall through mechanical action or simply, chewing.  This is bypassed when ingesting a dry herb in capsule form.  Therefore, cellulase is added to deteriorate the cell wall, which is comprised of cellulose to maximize the delivery of the herb’s active ingredients.

Liver Cleanse is a non-alcoholic extract that increases liver drainage and detoxification yet has ingredients that support liver tissue and aids in conditions that this organ helps control. In addition to the above-mentioned Milk Thistle and Dandelion Root, the balance of the formulation is described as follows.

Polygonum Multiflorum (Fo Ti) replenishes the "vital essence" of the liver and increases its blood flow thereby increasing drainage.  This herb tonifies the liver and nourishes the blood.  Studies have shown it to be effective in supporting liver-involved conditions such as hypercholesterolemia, and lipid and glucose metabolism.

Burdock has been traditionally used as a blood cleanser and purifier for the liver and is a rich source of inulin that supports the immune system.

Artemesia Capillaris (Chinese Wormwood) and Gardenia Jasminoidis have constituents that enhance the drainage of toxins through stimulation of bile secretion.  Both herbs work synergistically to regenerate hepatocytes.

Fructus Lycii Chinensis has a protective effect on the liver.  Studies have shown that extractions of Fructus Lycii reduced damage to the hepatic cells secondary to exposure to carbon tetrachloride and hastened recovery as measured by liver function studies and histological examinations.

Long term ingestion of this herb has shown a positive effect on lipid metabolism.  According to traditional Chinese medicine it nourishes and tonifies the liver for patterns of yin and blood deficiency.

SC Liver Formula (SC refers to Special Care) is specifically indicated in the treatment of liver cancer.  The combination of Burdock, Sheep Sorrel, Slippery Elm and Turkish Rhubarb has a history of demonstrated effectiveness for this condition.  This combination works synergistically to cleanse and rejuvenate the blood and support the immune system.  Turkish Rhubarb itself has been prescribed in traditional Chinese medicine for the cancer.

Galium Aparine (Cleavers) has been demonstrated in studies as an effective cancer treatment.  Oldenlandia Diffusa is a highly recommended herb for liver ailments in traditional Chinese medicine where it has also been used for the treatment of cancer.

Momordica Charantia has been traditionally used to treat and fortify the liver and is a potent immune system stimulant.  Curcuma Zedoria increases bile production and provides tissue-supporting antioxidants such as Curcumin.  Hypericum Japonicum detoxifies the liver by increasing liver metabolism and is also an excellent antioxidant.

Product Summary and Recommendations

Liver Cleanse- Cleanses the liver by increasing liver metabolism, leading to an increase in the amount of toxins that the liver can break down. Increasing liver metabolism also increases free radical production. Thus we have to increase antioxidant support during a cleanse. Liver Cleanse also increases blood flow through the liver as well as increasing bile flow thus accelerating the clearance of some stored breakdown products and aiding in their elimination from the body.  Liver Support can be used in conjunction with Liver Cleanse for antioxidant and general support.

Liver Support- Primary function is to (1) increase antioxidant support to the liver, (2) increase the regeneration of new liver cells and (3) increase the ability of the damaged hepatocytes to be repaired.

SC Liver- Primary function is to fight liver cancer and at the same time provide some support for the liver. Liver Support should be used in conjunction with SC Liver.
