Quercetin is one of the most active flavonoids and is responsible for much of the medicinal activity in most plants. It also serves as a backbone for many other flavonoids and preserves other antioxidants such as vitamin C. It is well absorbed and water-soluble.
Quercetin has been used to treat a number of conditions, which include: Inflammation – Quercetin directly inhibits a number of inflammatory processes including the manufacture and release of
histamines.
Diabetes – Quercetin is a strong inhibitor of aldose reductase and thus minimizes the conversion of glucose to sorbitol. Sorbitol contributes to the development of diabetic complications including cataracts, neuropathy and retinopathy. Quercetin is also known to enhance insulin secretion, protect pancreatic beta cells from free radical damage and inhibit platelet aggregation.
Viral infections – Of the flavonoid group, quercetin has the greatest antiviral activity especially against certain types of viruses.
Tumours – Studies have demonstrated that quercetin, more than other flavonoids, has been an effective inhibitor of tumour formation caused by a number of different cancers.
